You can not paint all kinds of plastic. These plastics are called Polypropylene (abbreviated PP) and Polyethylene (abbreviated PE).

If you want to paint these two types of plastic, the primer and the paint will not adhere well and peel off. What is a waste of your work, of course.

So find out what type of plastic your furniture or object is made of before you continue.
Degreasing Plastic Surface.

Normally you degrease surfaces with ammonia or St. Marc. But you can also degrease plastic surfaces with a little alcohol.

With a cloth and some alcohol, you clean the surface quickly.

Which Primer Should I Use?

A primer is important when applying a new layer of paint on plastic. If you apply paint directly to plastic, chances are that it does not adhere well.

In addition to lightly sanding the plastic, the primer ensures that the paint does not peel and remains good for a long time.

You can get primers from pot and in a spray can.

With a spray primer it is necessary to use a mouth mask. And preferably also safety goggles to protect your eyes.

For small surfaces, a pot of plastic primer may be too much and you are left with too much. Then it is best to use a spray can of primer.

Which Type of Paint Is Suitable For Plastic?

You can get plastic paint in many different colors. In the sprayer version the color is already chosen for you, so it is more difficult to get exactly the color you want.

But there is enough choice in color. From gold to a matte white finish.

Because of the vapors and tiny paint particles that come in the air in an aerosol can you have a very well ventilated area.

Plastic Painting: What You Need

You need the following products and materials to paint plastic:


Cotton cleaning cloth;
Bucket or teil;
Sponge;
Mild detergent;
Hot water;
Plastic primer
Plastic paint;
Mouth cap;
Safety glasses;
Brush with soft hair;
Fine sandpaper or sanding block (Grain 500 or higher);
Plastic sail or old paper;
Painter's gloves;
Painting tape;
Washing gloves.
Step-by-Step Plastic Painting

Proceed as follows to apply the primer and the paint. In this example we use a spray can.

Step 1: Fill a bucket or teat with warm water and add a little detergent.

Step 2: You can put on a pair of dishwashing gloves for this. You can also do it at the next step with the cleaning alcohol. Because your hands dry out.

Immerse the sponge in the hot water and clean the plastic surface. Let it dry.

Step 3: Drop a little bit of cleaning alcohol onto a cotton cleaning cloth. Clean the plastic surface further.

Step 4: Place a plastic sheet or old paper on the floor of your garden or balcony. Put your plastic chair, bench or other plastic object on the tarpaulin or paper.

Make sure you also protect the environment.

Step 5: Stick the parts with masking tape from your plastic chair or bench that you do not want to have painted. Think of the legs or the handrails.

Step 6: Put on a mouth cap and possibly put on safety goggles. Start carefully with a sanding of the plastic surface with the fine sandpaper or block.

Step 7: After scouring remove all residues of plastic from the surface with a brush.

Step 8: Apply or spray the plastic primer as described in the instructions.

If you do not have a mouthpiece or safety glasses yet, do it now.

Apply a thin layer. You can possibly apply two thin layers of primer. It is better to apply two thin layers of primer than a thick layer.

The result is in fact smoother.

Step 9: Let the primer dry for the duration stated in the instructions.

Step 10: Then apply the lacquer paint over the primer. Apply several (up to 4 to 5) thin layers for the best effect.

Also protect your airways and your eyes with a mouth mask and safety glasses.

Step 11: Let the paint dry thoroughly before you use it.

Continue to the next cup to get your plastic chair or bench in two or more colors.

Are you satisfied with one color on the plastic, then you can let the paint harden. It takes about a day or two before the paint is really dry and you can use it.

Putty knife;

Fine sandpaper (Grain 180 or higher).

First read the instructions for use of the wall filler that you have purchased. In many cases you can proceed as follows.

Step 1: Make sure you remove all the pieces and loose or half-loose pieces of wall from the holes or cracks. You can use an awl, old knife or a paint scraper.

Step 2: Open the wall filler. In some cases it is powder and you have to make a paste yourself in other cases, it is already ready-made.

The two examples, the Bolivia and the Alabastine wall filler are both ready-made.

Step 3: Fill the plant spray with lukewarm water. Spray some water on the cracks, holes etcetera in the wall. This way the wall filler can attach better.

Step 4: Apply some wall filler to the putty knife and rub the hole or tear it shut.

If you have a deep crack or holes in your bedroom wall you can best apply different layers of wall filler.

First allow a thin layer of filler to dry, and apply a second layer.

Step 5: Let the last layer dry. Sand the wall filler with fine sandpaper.

Dust can be released. Make sure you wear a face mask and wear safety goggles when sanding.
What kind of paint should I choose?

Primer or Not?

Primer works as a kind of primer. It is an underlay to better adhere the wall paint to the wall.

If the surface (wall) is powdery or absorbs moisture very quickly, primer is a good way to use before you paint.

You can test the bedroom walls or you need primer by pressing a wet sponge or cloth.

If the water is quickly absorbed into the wall, you must use primer.

If the water is 'lying' on the wall then you do not need to use a primer.

Bedroom Walls Paints: Step-by-Step

Proceed as follows.

Step 1: Protect the bed and other stuff in your bedroom against the degreaser, possibly primer and paint with plastic sheets.

Put stuff in the hallway or in another room if possible.

Step 2: Start with the dust removal of the wall and the overall bedroom. Make sure that there is as little as possible in the paintwork.

Then put a plastic sheet or old newspapers on the floor.

Open the window. Ventilate the bedroom well before you really get started.

Step 3: Fill a bucket with warm water and add degreaser to it. Put on a pair of dishwashing gloves.

In case you use ammonia, you should also wear a mask and put on safety goggles.

Immerse the sponge and grease all surfaces that you want to paint.

Allow the surfaces to dry well.

Step 4: Take a piece of sandpaper with a fine grain. A sanding machine does go a bit faster with larger surfaces.

Sand the wall lightly so that the (primer and) paint can adhere well.

Step 5: Take the vacuum cleaner again and suck up the dust from the sanding.

Step 6: Stick the edges and spots with masking tape, so that no (primer and) paint can come on.

Step 6: Apply the primer as described in the instructions.

The drying of a layer of primer costs on average 8 hours before you can overpaint it.

Step 7: Open the wall paint. In most cases you use paint or water base. You can dilute this lightly with a little water.

Stir the paint well with a paint rudder.

Step 8: Pour a little wall paint into a paint box. Start by painting the corners with a brush. Start with a thin first layer.

Step 9: Then continue pulling long tracks with the paint roller (on a telescopic pole). Apply a first thin layer.

You can apply an opaque layer of wall paint in your bedroom in one go, but that has a less good result than painting in two layers.

One thin layer also dries much better.

Step 10: Let the first layer of wall paint dry. But before you do that you can best draw the painting tape from the edges. So if you have dried the paint you do not draw paint ...

On average, it takes about 8 hours before you can paint over it.

Step 11: Stick the masking tape again in the corners and edges to protect the bedroom.

Apply a second layer of wall paint in your bedroom as described in the two steps 8 and 9 above.

Starting With Cleaning Walls

Before you start painting the bathroom walls it is important that the surface is clean. This is how the paint adheres better.

If your wall does not look dirty you can simply clean the walls with degreaser and a mild detergent before you paint.

But a bathroom often suffers from other problems. Maybe there is mold in the corners or there are yellow spots on the wall.

Remove fungus

Removing the mold before you paint is very important. If you suffer from fungus and paint immediately, you will quickly find a new mold attack on your freshly painted wall.

If you do not tackle the source of the mold then a few layers of paint will not help.

First remove the mold and ensure that no new mold attack can occur.

Yellow Attack On The Walls

Do you suffer from yellow rash on the wall? That looks ugly, of course.

If you have a yellow touch in your bathroom, you do not have to take out your brush and paint right away.

Would you just have the old color back that was before the yellow attack. Then you can save money and a lot of time simply by thoroughly cleaning your bathroom walls.

If you can not get rid of the yellow glow with the following step-by-step plan, you can still paint the bathroom walls.

You need the following:
White vinegar;
Plant spray / old sponge;
Bucket;
Sponge.

Proceed as follows.

Step 1: Fill a bucket with warm water and add a dash of cleaning vinegar or white vinegar.


You can also fill a plant spray with a part of water and a part of vinegar.

Step 2: Apply the vinegar with water to the yellow scale on your bathroom walls.

Divide the vinegar with water through the walls with the plant spray.

You can also apply the mix by sweeping over the wall with a sponge.

Step 3: Let the vinegar do its work for an hour.

Step 4: Fill a bucket with clean warm water. Immerse a clean sponge in the water and wipe the bathroom walls clean.

Degreasing The Walls

Degreasing the bathroom walls is necessary. If you do not degrease the surfaces then the paint does not adhere well and it can start to peel over time.

There are different types of degreasers that you can use.

Ammonia is one of the most famous and cheapest degreasers. The disadvantage of ammonia is that it can irritate the eyes and your airways.


Especially in a small room like your bathroom it is not nice to work with ammonia.

Fortunately, there are alternatives. You have Alabastine paint cleaner - € 3.25 and St. Marc - € 7.29 that smells more pleasant and that degreases the walls just as well.
Repair Walls: Make Plaster Uniform

Do you have holes, scratches or cracks in your bathroom wall? Then it is now the perfect time to work this out.

After leveling and refurbishing the walls you can paint over it and you will have a beautiful wall again.

You can use Alabastine wall filler. The easiest way is to use € 7.95for the filler (ready to use). This wall filler comes in a tube and you do not have to make it with water. In short, less mess.

If you have larger holes and cracks to fill then a wall filler based on powder is cheaper. But for the small dents and cracks a tube is sufficient.

You need the following:
Degreaser;
Old sponge;
Bucket;
Hot water;
Washing gloves;
Fine sandpaper (Grain 220 or higher);
Mouth cap;
Safety glasses;
Plant spray;
Wall filler;
Putty knife.

Proceed in steps as follows.

Step 1: Fill a bucket with warm water. Add the degreaser you have chosen here.

Do you work with ammonia then you can put on the best washing gloves, a mask and do a safety glasses.

Step 2: Clean the holes, dents and cracks with the degreaser. Let it dry for a while.

Step 3: Loosen any loose pieces of wall with a putty knife.

Step 4: Put on a mouth cap (if you do not already have it) and shove the spots in the wall so that the wall filler will attach better.

Step 5: Fill the plant spray with warm water and spray it a bit on the tear or hole.

Step 6: Knead the tube so that the wall filler becomes smoother. Spray a little wall filler onto the putty knife.

Step 7: Place the wall filler on the spot. Allow it to dry for a while and apply a second coat of wall filler if necessary.

Let the wall filler become hard.

Step 8: Put on your mouth cap again and put on your safety glasses. Sand the wall with fine sandpaper.

Untreated Wall Paint

If you have a bathroom wall that has never been painted before, it is important to prepare it properly for the paint layer.

If your bathroom wall has already been painted, you can continue to the ' Selecting the Right Paint for the Bathroom ' heading .

Before you paint, apply a layer of primer to the wall so that the paint is not sucked up through the porous wall.

In addition, primer ensures a more even finish and better protection of the wall.

Primer can be seen as a primer for walls.

You need the following to apply primer to your bathroom wall:
Degreaser (bucket, hot water, old sponge and washing gloves);
Primer;

Block brush;

Proceed step-by-step as follows.

Step 1: Ventilate your bathroom before you apply primer. Open the door or window.

Step 2: Use a degreaser to clean the unprocessed wall. Put on washing gloves. Fill a bucket with degreaser and warm water.

Step 3: Clean the wall (s) with an old sponge. Allow the surface to dry before proceeding with the primer.

Step 4: Stick the parts of the bathroom where you do not want to have a primer and paint, such as a tile wall or the floor.

Place a plastic sheet on the floor.

Step 5: Put on a pair of painter's gloves. Put a part of the primer in a paint box.

Step 6: Make sure there are no hairs in the block brush. Stroke your hair over the hair to flip out the loose ones.

Step 7: Apply the wall primer with the block brush in the corners.

Step 8: For the large areas you can continue with the fur roller.

Step 9: Remove the painting tape and let the primer dry for at least 6 hours before you can continue painting.
Choosing Right Paint For The Bathroom

In the bathroom it is important to choose the right paint. The paint must of course be able to withstand moisture well.

You can (unfortunately) not use ordinary wall paint to whiten your bathroom wall or provide a color.

Paint intended for damp areas ensures that the surfaces do not quickly peel and that the chance of mold is reduced.

Paint for the bathroom is more moisturizing than normal wall paint and you can keep it easier to clean.

Is your wall clean, even and possibly provided with a primer? Then we can finally get started with actually painting your bathroom walls.

You need the following:
Painter's gloves;
Wall paint (suitable for wet rooms);
Paint rudder;
Paint tray;
Brush;
Paint roller;
Brush with soft hairs;
Plastic sail or old paper;
Painting tape;
Fine sandpaper (Grain 220 or higher;
Degreaser (hot water, bucket, washing gloves and sponge).

Proceed as follows when painting your walls in your bathroom.

Step 1: Ventilate your bathroom. Open the door or a window. It is best not to work with paint in a closed room.

Step 2: Place a plastic sheet on the floor.

Step 3: Fill a bucket with warm water. Add a dash of degreaser here. Put on a pair of dishwashing gloves. Use a mouth mask if you use ammonia.

Step 4: Immerse the sponge in the water with degreaser. Squeeze the sponge and clean the surface of the bathroom wall.

Let it dry.

Step 5: Hold your mask and put on safety goggles. Take the fine sandpaper and smooth the surface. This way the paint can adhere more tightly.

Be careful with sanding if you have used primer. You only need to sand the wall subtly.

Step 6: Remove the dust that has risen on the wall by sanding with a brush with soft hairs.

Step 7: Apply painting tape to keep the rest of your bathroom clean.

Step 8: Open the pot or bucket with wall paint. Stir the paint well with a paint rudder. Add some water to the paint to dilute it.

Pour the paint into a paint container.

Step 9: Make sure there are no hairs in the brush. Take it out by 'stroking' your hair with your hand.

Start with the corners and sides. Apply a thin layer of paint.

Step 10: Paint the large surfaces with a paint roller.

Step 11: Let the paint dry and apply a second thin layer of paint. The first layer of paint can be painted over after about 6.5 hours.

Multiple thin layers give a more beautiful effect than one thick layer.

Step 12: Immediately after painting, remove the masking tape from the corners to prevent damage to the paintwork.

Let the paint dry for 24 hours before you can bathe and shower in your bathroom again.

After an average of 1 month you can clean the walls with the right cleaning agents.
